Composite Number

Composite numbers are whole numbers that only have two factors and are not prime numbers, as they can be divided by more than two numbers.

The first few composite numbers are 4,6,8 and 9.

For example, the factors of number 4 include 4:1, 2 and 4. This is because it can be multiplied by 1×4 = 4 and 2×2 = 4

The factors of 6 would be, 6:1, 2, 3, and 6 (1×6 = 6, 2×3 = 6).

Factors of 8 are 8:1, 2, 4 and 8. (1×8 = 8 2×4 = 8).

Factors of 9 are 9:1, 3 and 9. (1×9 = 9 and 3×3 = 9).

Prime Number

Prime numbers are natural numbers that are divisible by only 1 and the number itself. In other words, prime numbers are positive integers greater than 1 with exactly two factors, 1 and the number itself. Some of the prime numbers include 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, etc. Always remember that 1 is neither prime nor composite. Thus, all prime numbers are greater than 1. Also, we can say that except for 1, the remaining numbers are classified as prime and composite numbers. In this article, you will learn the meaning and definition of prime numbers, their history, properties, prime numbers list and chart, the difference between prime numbers and composite numbers, how to find the prime numbers using formulas, along with examples.

Prime And Composite Numbers :

Prime and composite numbers are often grouped together in discussions because they of their similarities. Here are some quick definitions to get us started:

Prime number definition: A prime number is a whole number that has exactly two integral divisors. These are 1 and itself.

Many people think that 1 is a prime number, but it is not, 1 cannot be a prime number because it only has one divisor, itself.

Composite number definition: A composite number is a whole number that has more than two integral divisors. This means that all whole numbers, except 0 and 1, are either prime or composite numbers.

 2. v) 4 is the smallest even composite number.
 3. vi) 9 is the smallest odd composite number.

vii) 97 is the largest prime number less than 100.

How to Decide if a Number is Prime or Composite

There are several different ways to decide if a number is prime or composite.

There are two main ways elementary students are taught to determine if a number is a prime or composite number. First, factor the number. This method focuses on using students’ knowledge of multiplication to determine all the factors of a given number. Second, students can use their knowledge of division to see determine if a number can be divided by any other number besides 1.

Teaching both methods to your students is a great way to help each student find the method that words best for them.

By contrast, a composite number has more factors than 1 and itself; in other words, a composite number has more than two factors.

The smallest composite number is 4, with factors of 4, 1, and 2. Prime numbers are always odd except for the number 2, but odd numbers are not always prime. Consider the number 51. It looks like it could be prime, but in fact it is a composite number, with factors of 3 and 17.
